
Young Artist Solo Competition Guidelines 2015-2016
The Starlight Symphony Orchestra, is hosting a solo competition and invites outstanding musical youth to compete. The two top performers will be selected as the featured soloists with the Starlight Symphony Orchestra at the Young Artist Festival concerts to be held in April. The solo competition is open to all orchestral instruments, including strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion, and piano. Suitable pieces are solo works that are intended to be performed with orchestral accompaniment. Examples of such pieces are a movement of a concerto, or one, two, or three movements of a suite, divertimento, or concertina. Students performing slow movements may want to also include a contrasting fast movement. Time length of your selection should not exceed 15 minutes. Important: Please check with your music director/private lesson teacher to verify the existence of an orchestral accompaniment.
Eligibility: To participate in the Young Artist Solo Competition students must be in middle or high school.
Applications: All applications must be postmarked no later than January 8, 2016. Available for download below.
Auditions: January 23, 2016
Three professional adjudicators will hear the auditions. Participants are required to provide their own accompanist for the audition. accompaniment available.
Awards: Winning soloists will receive a certificate and a $500 scholarship towards education in music. Each soloist will also receive the opportunity to perform with the Starlight Symphony Orchestra on April 9 & 10, 2016.
Soloists must be available to perform on the concert dates and rehearse with the orchestra prior to the concerts. Any students who have received compensation from the SSO for musician services will not be eligible. Any student who has previously received a Young Artist Scholarship Award will not be selected as a soloist the next consecutive year.
